'Dream on': One Hacker's challenge to Break Par in a year. By John Richardson
What are your golfing dreams? It might be to knock a few shots of your handicap, maybe even to beat that friend of yours who beats you week in week out. It might even be the dream of turning pro. Either way we all have them. For Golfhacker it is simply to break 90 again after a year of 100 plus rounds and a few in the 90's. For John Richardson it was to score one round in Par within a year. May sound simple but John was your classic 100 plus hacker.
He wasn't always that way. He used to be pretty handy around a course in his teens but then life, work and family meant he didn't play as much. John's friend Stuart had the chance to meet the great Sam Torrance, the Ryder cup star at the Belfry. Stuart told Sam about his friend's Challenge to go from being a 100 plus hacker with a full time job and family, to shoot a Par round in the space of the year.
"Well, you can tell him from me to dream on" was Sam's blunt response.
With the challenge now set, Richardson goes on his quest to score one level Par round in the space of a year. Will he do it? Well he's going to need some help that's for sure. Help comes from the PGA professional at Blackwood Golf Club in Northern Ireland. Debbie Hanna takes up Richardson's cause and supports him throughout his challenge. Support also comes from Richardson's fictional chats with Seve Ballesteros as he goes on his challenge...Thankfully these chats were in his head. But it is all too easy to envisage the great Seve actually following Richardson. If anyone loved a challenge it was Seve.
In one of his chats with his imaginary Seve, It was clear that Seve was no fan of the Lob wedge. Richardson's Seve tells him "Now, Meester Richardson, you put that stupeed club away and learn some feel." In order to accomplish the challenge, John was focusing on new technologies in golf and his new addiction to buying golfing items on eBay.
Richardson talks openly about this new addiction and his wife is not best pleased as the house quickly gets filled with new items on a daily basis. It's ok, they are cheap second hand knock offs, is John's attitude not really sensing his wife's annoyance. Thankfully, Richardson's wife is understanding to his challenge . "I got off lightly- no doubt about it"
Throughout the book, Richardson talks openly and frankly about his challenge. His frustrations, juggling his responsibilities of work and family, and also his tactics about how the challenge could be done. Many people had written off his chances online but this is a true Rocky-esque tale. Will his hard and dedication pay off? Well I'm not telling you that part...you'll need to read it to find out.
An inspiring read and proof of what hard work and dedication can do. What amazes me is that he managed a year of solid golf, training and work...without the divorce papers arriving.
The book is currently undergoing the Hollywood treatment, so to speak. Currently in production for it's own feature film. This is one film Golfhacker is really looking forward to. But before it comes, you'll have to read this amazingly honest, inspirational and at times, funny book. Every golfer can relate to this tale of golfing obsession and who knows, you may fancy taking up a challenge yourself.
Mr Richardson...Golfhacker salutes you.
