As Jason Day conceded to Pat Perez after the seventh hole of his WGC World Matchplay, it was clear something wasn’t right. Perhaps it was his back injury returning. A discomfort that has previously seen him withdraw in the past. One thing was for sure, he was playing badly.
Twitter feeds went crazy as the world number 3 withdrew. Yet, Day has been carrying a secret that has weighed him down. A secret he was willing to reveal during his press conference.
His back is fine, there are no physical pains. However, emotionally he is in pieces. You would be to if you knew your mother was suffering from Lung Cancer.
Doctors in Brisbane gave his mother 12 months to live. Day has brought his mother to Ohio for a second opinion. She is scheduled to have an operation on Friday.
An emotional Jason Day told the media that “I just need some time away with her to make sure that everything goes well because this has been very, very tough for me. So I’m going to do my best and try and be there the best I can for her because she is the reason that I’m playing golf today. And family is first and it’s just … it’s just a hard time.”
This is not the first time Day has had to deal with cancer within his family. He lost his father when he was just 12 years old. Since then, his mother has been his rock. Her support has been instrumental throughout his life and career. Now she needs his support and he is doing everything he can for her.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jason and his family during this difficult time.
