Golf fans in Suffolk and East Anglia will have a rare opportunity to watch one of the legends of European women’s golf thanks to a special event that teams amateurs with stars of the Ladies European Tour.
Trish Johnson, an 18-time winner on the Ladies European Tour and a veteran of eight Solheim Cup matches, is one of several top professionals appearing in the second Thorpeness LET Pro-Am at Thorpeness Hotel and Golf Club on August 30 and 31.
Johnson, most recently the winner of the 2017 Senior LPGA Championship – a Major for Senior women professionals – will be joined at Thorpeness by LET players including Felicity Johnson, Sophie Walker and Inci Mehmet.
There are 14 teams competing in the two-day event which is organised by Christine Langford, Senior Golf Professional at Thorpeness and a founding member of the Ladies European Tour.
Christine Langford, said: “We are extremely lucky to have some of the best British women’s professional golfers teeing up at Thorpeness to play with amateurs, club members and guests.
If you’re a golf fan this is a brilliant opportunity to see top professionals playing up close at one of the UK’s Top-100 golf courses. The tournament field is full but everyone is welcome to come and watch and enjoy the course, clubhouse and facilities here in Thorpeness.”
Among the amateur competitors in the field is sports broadcaster and radio host Georgie Bingham, who was born and raised in Suffolk and plays regularly at Thorpeness and Aldeburgh golf clubs.
Bingham is the presenter of Weekend Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT Radio and has enjoyed a successful 20 year plus career working for media outlets including Sky Sports, ESPN in the USA, Channel 4, Channel 5, BBC Suffolk and ITV Daybreak.
Amateurs playing in the event have exclusive access to their professional partners over the two-day event, playing and practicing together and enjoying time to socialise over lunch and dinner on each day.
The winner of the inaugural 2017 Thorpeness LET Pro-Am was Meghan Maclaren, who went on to claim her first LET title earlier this year with victory in the Women's NSW Open at Coffs Harbour, Australia.
Meghan set a new women’s course record for Thorpeness last year by shooting 72 from the Men’s Championship tees.
