From holing a remarkable and somewhat historic ten-foot putt at the 2002 Ryder Cup, to captaining Europe to victory in the tournament in 2014, it is fair to say that iconic Irish golfer, Paul McGinley has made his mark on the sport. Now, the star who has won four times on the European Tour, is set to take part in this year’s Farmfoods European Senior Masters which takes place between 4–7 October at the Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club.
Following a fantastic performance in last year’s inaugural event, he will be hoping to reign supreme at the Forest of Arden, as he looks to win the €50,000 prize that comes with the coveted title.
Throughout his career McGinley has experienced a whole host of memorable moments, most of which have come whilst representing Europe in the Ryder Cup. Arguably his most famous moment came in the 2002 Ryder Cup at the Belfry when in a match against Jim Furyk he sunk a ten-foot putt. This feat reclaimed the Ryder Cup for Europe and was the first of three consecutive victories for the team, with Paul playing a significant role along the way.
In 2014 he took over as Europe’s captain and lead the team to victory once again. He won’t be the only Ryder Cup star in attendance at this year’s event, 1991 Masters winner Ian Woosnam OBE, and event host, Peter Baker will also be vying for the title at this year’s event.
Peter explained his delight at Paul’s announcement for this year’s event.
He said: “Paul is one of the best players of his generation and played a huge role in some of the most memorable Ryder Cup moments of recent times. His calibre and status within the game can only add to the prestige of this year’s Farmfoods European Senior Masters.”
He continued: “This year marks Paul’s first appearance at the event as he is new to the Staysure Tour. Having played in a few tournaments already this year he is sure to be amongst the best of the action over the course of the event and will certainly be one to watch.”
More professional players will be announced in the coming weeks as the anticipation for the event continues to grow.
