The multi-award winning Gwel an Mor Resort on the North Cornish coast have launched a new 9 hole golf course for the South West– The Famous Nine at Gwel an Mor.
The UK’s largest all weather greens and tees golf course, this unique new course was opened by legendary golf champion Bernard Gallacher OBE. Named The Famous Nine at Gwel an Mor, this Par 3 course is a tribute to some of the best holes from around the globe - from St Andrews to Augusta; Royal Troon to Sawgrass; Pebble Beach to Carnoustie, with elements of each of these golfing greats inspiring this new course.
Created to challenge and excite even the most experienced golfers, the course boasts spectacular elevated coastal views, spanning the North Cornish countryside surrounding the Gwel an Mor Resort. By sourcing the latest developments in golf course design, utilising all weather greens and tees, the course will be playable all year round with the changeable Cornish weather ensuring every game will be different and offer a new set of challenges and conditions.
With the project 4 years in the making, from concept and design through to extensive landscaping, the course’s architect is PGA Professional, David Cooper. This ambitious project has resulted in over 250,000 tons of earth being imported to create the course’s levels and undulations, with a further 25,000 tons dug out to complete The Famous Nine’s water features.
Seen as the future of golf, The Famous Nine at Gwel an Mor takes approximately an hour and a half to play a round, suiting the growing trend of modern golfing of shorter, less time-intensive courses. The aim with the nine hole course is also to attract junior golfers, introducing new players to a world-class course and golf at its best, encouraging more young people to play the sport.
Bernard Gallacher commented “I was intrigued when I heard about the idea of nine holes inspired by famous holes around the world and I enjoyed playing the course very much. The most life-like was the hole inspired by the ‘Postage Stamp’ – when I stood on the tee it felt exactly like it, hats off to the course designer David Cooper for creating a terrific course”
Style and space combined with top class facilities – the multi-award winning Gwel an Mor resort offers the ultimate in luxury coastal breaks, providing five star self catering accommodation in a spectacular Cornish location.
